Pick Up N' Play
Big Brothers Big Sisters along with our community partners have been collecting gently used and new sports equipment over the past few months. We are happy to announce that we will be hosting a family fun day event, called Pick Up and Play. The public is invited to join us at the George Leach Centre (Algoma University) to come grab any sports equipment that they need, and head across the road to Anna McCrea to participate in a family skate!
On Wednesday, November 23rd, 2016 Big Brothers Big Sisters of Sault Ste. Marie’s Board of Directors elected a new president and welcomed two new directors. As Marc Sageloly’s presidential term came to an end, Glyn Heatley, who has been serving as a director since March of 2014, was elected as President of the Board. The agency would like to congratulate Glyn on his new position, and looks forward to implementing Glyn’s innovative ideas and shared vision for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Sault Ste. Marie.
The agency would also like to extend our sincere thanks and gratitude to Marc Sageloly. Marc has gone above and beyond in his role as president. Thankfully, Marc will continue to be a very active and supportive member of the agency. Marc’s dedication and enthusiasm for Big Brothers Big Sisters is truly incomparable. Marc began his involvement with the agency as a Big Brother in 1999 and has continued to volunteer for the agency since. In 2001, Marc transitioned to a volunteer with the Big Bunch and Friend for a Day program and was elected to the board of directors in December of 2002. Marc remained a Big Bunch and Friend for a Day volunteer throughout his presidency, volunteering to spend his time with Littles who are waiting to be matched. Marc supports fund raising events and assists the staff in any way possible. Again, thank you Marc for everything you have done.
Along with a new president, the board also elected two new members, Pauline Martin and Dale Rayner, who both volunteer as “BIGS” in our traditional one-to-one match program. The agency would like to welcome Pauline and Dale to the board!
On Saturday, November 12th, 2016 the Soo Thunderbirds hockey team replaced their hockey sticks with rakes for the day as they volunteered for Big Brothers Big Sisters’ Rake-A-Thon. The team, as well as their coaches Jordan Smith and Ryan Maunu, attended 8 households throughout the city and raked and bagged leaves as part of Big Brothers Big Sisters ongoing fundraiser, the Rake-A-Thon.
On Sunday, October 30th 2016, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Sault Ste. Marie held their first annual fundraiser, the "Rake-A-Thon." Agency staff, volunteers and community volunteers grabbed their rakes and cleaned up over 20 lawns throughout the city, filling over 275 bags with leaves. Leaf bags were provided by our sponsors, Lowe's, Lyons Timber Mart, Soo Mill, RONA, Home Hardware and TSC.
The BIG Bail Out 2016
On Thursday, September 15th 2016, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Sault Ste. Marie held their second annual fundraiser, the “BIG Bail Out.” Volunteer prisoners experienced a mock arrest; were put in handcuffs; escorted by a “police officer” into their jail cells; donned jumpsuits; while their co-workers enjoyed the show, cheered the volunteer prisoners on as they attempted to “make bail!”
Thank you to Bell Aliant who once again generously donated backpacks full of school supplies for our littles!
On Thursday, August 25th 2016, the Community Hub Neighbourhoods hosted the first ever "Game On" Street Party. The party was located at the Chapple Albion Community Hub and included many fun activities such as ball hockey, basketball, arts and crafts, inflatables and more.
